This is a question many have asked, which deserves to be handled with accuracy and in a delicate manner, precisely because there are many believing Catholics who sincerely love our LORD and Savior Jesus Christ. These are our brothers and sisters and they have come to a genuine saving faith in the LORD. With that said, we must be able to distinguish between Catholicism and individual Catholics. So, let me be very clear: we are going to endeavor to discuss Catholicism. And in doing so, I wish to respect my Catholic brothers and sisters who are in the LORD.
Having been reared in a Roman Catholic home, I can speak indelibly to the church and its organization. When I came to Christ at the age of nineteen my entire life changed. Jesus Christ is precisely who He says He is. He performed many miracles in my life and I immediately realized the deception upon which the Catholic church imbibes. Prior to my salvation I had no knowledge or understanding of Christ or what He had accomplished. I had never met Him personally or had an encounter with Him. I had very little knowledge of the Bible. I had absolutely no understanding of salvation, and therefore, I had none. I was thus lost and confused. Once I was born again, I understood, being enlightened by the Holy Spirit. I was intensely saddened and grieved that I had lived into my young adulthood without any understanding of what Christ had truly done for me, despite my religious involvement in the Catholic church. I felt betrayed and deceived by this organization and its teachings. And that is when I realized that their leadership who served me were equally as betrayed and deceived, even as I was, which was why they were powerless to reveal Christ to me.
My story is merely one among millions of others who have come to the saving knowledge of the Truth. Catholics can indeed be saved and come to Christ while remaining Catholic. Yet even so, they still fear leaving the Catholic church due to its harsh doctrine and the spiritual or social consequences they face. So, they remain fettered to it. But more often than not, many Catholics are not practicing, or they are ignorant of that to which they adhere. These are often Catholics by virtue of birth. And there are many practicing Catholics who don’t know Jesus Christ personally, who have not been saved (born again), who live their lives in spiritual and mental angst, darkness, fear, and confusion. They thirst and hunger for the Lord, but they can’t seem to find Him.
I am incredibly grateful to God for revealing Himself to me. I have come to know Him intimately, and I have experienced many wonders of His kingdom and His Spirit. Jesus Christ is absolutely Wonderful. He is amazing and glorious. He is well able to save, heal, deliver, and make all things new. I pray this FAQ entry helps many others, like myself, find and come to the knowledge of our LORD and Savior Jesus Christ.
Defining a Cult
First, we must define a cult before we can progress any further. Understand, cults vary widely. They may have more than one of the attributes listed below. But if you find you’re checking more than three on this list, it’s definitely high time to take a step back and consider whether or not you’ve become involved in one yourself, irrespective of the Catholicism being discussed here.
(1) · REIGN SUPREME WITH LACK OF ACCOUNTABILITY: A cult is self-inflated and elevated. It is a group of people led by a supreme order, legal entity, or being that espouses and enforces specific orders, doctrines, beliefs, and practices in a manner incongruent with the Word of God which allows them to lord all of this over their followers. The leadership has little to no accountability to those they serve, because they answer to no one but themselves. There is no one higher than themselves. In this, the organization becomes insulated by those in power against anyone or anything outside that could possibly present a challenge or place it in question. When mere questions or alternative views are met with offense or viewed as threatening, this is one of the most glaring signs a cult is operating.
(2) · THE ONE TRUE WAY: Cults often teach they are the only true way to God and that others are lost apart from them. This is not a plea for Christ and His kingdom toward the lost, but rather it insulates and expands their own congregation of followers. The goal is always greater control over a greater number of people. They hoard and monopolize the masses, and they polarize people. They do not make disciples of Christ, but of men who enjoy a throng of followers.
(3) · ESOTERIC KNOWLEDGE: Cults introduce a variety of esoteric knowledge they alone boast in having, which is exclusive, and therefore undisputed by outsiders. This can come by way of visions, dreams, prophecy, angelic visitations, men of renown, and/or additional religious texts they have authored.
(4) · HERESY: Cults, although commonly having some measure of truth, employ heretical teachings and doctrines that are unscriptural which bring deception, bondage, fear, and oppression to people of every kind. Sometimes the heresy is blatant. But most of the time its very well packaged, making it palatable for people who are biblically illiterate or just naive.
(5) · BASED UPON DOCTRINE INSTEAD OF SCRIPTURE: Cults often have a strict doctrinal system of beliefs which guide, organize, and establish their organization which are not based upon scripture, but rather their own enlightenment or revelations. Again, these are unique to their adherents. Although scripture may have its place in cults, it’s often distorted or maligned. It takes a back seat to their own doctrines. It’s not given the authority God intended, and it’s often weaponized against people.
(6) · AUTHORITARIAN LEADERSHIP: Cults often have leadership that is authoritarian in nature. There is no room for ambiguity, questioning, deference, argument, differences of opinion, or doctrinal diversions of any kind. People are taught to follow strict orders and rules, and if they depart from these they can suffer grave consequences either socially, morally, spiritually, or otherwise.
(7) · GOVERN WITH FEAR: Cults govern with fear. Their followers are often threatened in various ways, either by virtue of inherent doctrinal beliefs and practices, or by the leadership and clergy themselves.
(8) · DEMAND STRICT ALLEGIANCE: Cults demand strict allegiance in every respect which extends far beyond the individual. It engrosses families, communities, and even nations of people. People who want to depart are often punished, ostracized, threatened, or worse — even killed. Those who belong to certain cults may be forced to take vows of allegiance, or oaths of various kinds to their leadership, church, organization, or otherwise.
(9) · EXERTION OF CONTROL: Cults exert enormous control and they do so with great arrogance and confidence. They are inflated with pride. They employ control measures through various people and means to ensure their followers do not depart from them, transgress their teachings, or malign their reputation. Control can include mental, emotional, social, familial, sexual, communal, physical, and even financial abuses in addition to the spiritual abuse suffered.
(10) · POWERLESS SUBSERVIENT PEOPLE: The laity involved with any cult are often kept powerless, ignorant, deceived, and are either manipulated or coerced to serve the leadership at their whim. If followers or laity question their authority they are shunned, punished, ostracized, or removed as one who is in rebellion. Freedom of thought or belief is not merely discouraged — it is neither tolerated or allowed.
(11) · FINANCIAL PROWESS: There is often an embarrassing amount of money associated with a cult organization. Wealth and its inherent power often accompany cults. They find innumerable ways to collect monies from their membership and beyond. In so doing they become financially independent, incredibly resourceful, and have enough financial prowess to enlarge themselves beyond the scope of any legitimate need, to the degree that they can be seen as “untouchable”.
(12) · ISOLATION: Many cults isolate their members from others in ways that may not be readily discerned or understood. Close relational ties with anyone outside the organization, especially with regard to covenants of marriage, is often forbidden. Isolation could also extend to family, friends, or through the forbidding of marriage, work, or school. Relational or social growth beyond the boundaries of the organization can be discouraged and therefore very limited, or even non-existent.
(13) · PRIDE AND ARROGANCE: Cult leaders often create a reputation of being above rebuke or reproach, which is narcissistic in nature. They are often untouchable. They are viewed as better than others. They enjoy favors and perks at the expense of their followers. They are elevated. They can be extremely arrogant and prideful. Their followers end up serving them — instead of them serving their followers, which is what Jesus Christ demonstrated. They place heavy demands upon people, and they can be very belligerent about it, perhaps even threatening. Cult leaders enjoy a myriad of luxuries while their followers are often suffering to make ends meet. In short, the humility, sacrifice, and servanthood Christ demonstrated is nowhere to be found.
The Origins of Catholicism
Contrary to its own teaching, which claims it to be the very first of any Christian church, and founded upon the Apostle Peter, Catholicism originated with Constantine the Great during the Byzantine era approximately 300 years following Christ’s death and resurrection. Constantine was a pagan who reputedly came to faith in Christ during his reign. However, that could remain in question when evaluating his life. His culture and society worshipped many pagan gods. In an effort to appease, Constantine merely substituted many of these gods with saints, statues, and the ardent worship of Mary. Constantine’s goal was to make the Church the head of the State whereby there would be no illegitimacy of its institution. It thereby became law and compulsory to obey its orders. Those who deferred or denounced were killed.
The first Christian church was the early Church of the book of Acts. It was founded by the Lord Himself, beginning with His eleven Apostles, which later included Paul, whom the Lord chose Himself to replace Judas. Paul was confronted by the risen Christ on the road to Damascus. Having seen the Lord face to face, he was later received and confirmed as a legitimate apostle. Paul references himself as one being “untimely born” and “the least of the apostles”. The early Church of Acts authored what we know to be the New Testament. Its members included Jesus’ mother, Mary, and the women who followed Him and were greeted by Him at the tomb. That congregation of followers, along with the three-thousand who were added in one day, was dispersed from Jerusalem. It grew over the period of several decades until the last Apostle, John, was finally deceased. At this time the Lord revealed Himself to the seven Churches in the book of Revelation by John the Apostle. By that time the early Church had taken root primarily throughout Asia Minor, and later grew to reach the world, suffering various persecutions among heathen nations and their governments. The early Church had no formal institution other than Christ, and the faith and word of His doctrine by His Apostles. The early Church was illiterate, had no access to the Holy texts, and relied upon the indwelling Holy Spirit and their hearing of the Word, which the Apostles encouraged repeatedly. The Revelation of Jesus Christ to John the Apostle was the last written oracle to His Church by which it would spring forward, being discovered many years later. John’s book, being the final word of God in the holy canon, marked both the end and beginning of an era in Christendom that is largely misunderstood and unrecognized. It was the first generation of the Church. From thence Christianity propelled forward upon the blood of its Apostles and prophets of old, all of whom were native Jews. These fulfilled the Lord’s Great Commission for more than two-hundred years — an age far prior to the founding of Catholicism.
The Doctrines of Catholicism
Below are some of the main doctrines, beliefs, and practices found in Catholicism. Understand, this list is not exhaustive, but could be considered more comprehensive. Scriptures are included for the sake of defending and upholding the Word of God and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It is the only proper way to refute these doctrinal beliefs and practices.
(1) · THE ONE TRUE CHURCH: Catholic is a word that means “universal”. It’s not a noun, but an adjective. Its literal definitive meaning gives understanding to why the Catholic Church identifies by that name. They believe they are the one true Church, being universal, and that salvation apart from them is not possible. Unless you are a Catholic, you stand condemned before God.
What the Word of God says:
4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; 5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all,” (Ephesians 4:4-6, KJV).
(2) · NECROMANCY AND IDOL WORSHIP: They pray to dead saints and to their statues (which are a graven image). They even pray to statues of Mary and of Christ on the cross which is a violation of the Second Commandment, which states that no graven image shall be made in God’s likeness. Perhaps the most blasphemous of practices is their ardent worship of Mary. Prayer to anyone other than God is an abomination to God and was punishable by death. Communication with the dead (necromancy) is also an abomination to God punishable by death.
What the Word of God says:
1 And God spake all these words, saying, 2 I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. 4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: 5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; 6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments, (Exodus 20:1-6, KJV).
And:
9 When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations. 10 There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, 11 Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. 12 For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee, (Deuteronomy 18:9-12, KJV).
(3) · JESUS CHRIST IS INSUFFICIENT: They do not believe the work of Jesus Christ on the cross is sufficient for salvation. Again, this is a defamation of Christ and His work according to scripture. Catholicism employs a doctrine of various works by which people never have the full assurance of salvation. Salvation is not promised, but hoped for; it’s constantly waxing and waning, being dependent upon their works. As such, eternal salvation becomes elusive for the Catholic. This leaves them in an unceasing state of fear, anxiety, oppression, and angst by which they are compelled to serve and participate in the church’s orders and doctrine. In fact, many Catholics silently suffer an overarching feeling of grief, shame, fear, and even despair in their emotional and spiritual lives in contrast to the resounding hope, joy, freedom, and peace enjoyed by those who are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. These doctrines involve praying the rosary, participating in various public services, being baptized at infancy, going through confirmation at the age of accountability, taking the eucharist as a sacrament, going to confession, following the strict Catholic order obediently, praying to saints, worshipping Mary, and attending Mass at the scheduled times — none of which are scripturally valid.
What the Word of God says:
1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; 2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: 3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. 4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, 5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) 6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: 7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast, (Ephesians 2:1-9, KJV).
(4) · INTERNATIONAL ORDER, GOVERNANCE, AND RULE: The Catholic Church is ordered and governed internationally by the Pope and various Cardinals who serve beneath him. Their rule is international. The Papacy is reportedly crafted after the Levitical Priesthood. This would explain some of their raiment which has a likeness in its design, yet is altogether different. Everything from the Pope’s regal crown, white and gold robe, and ornamental staff all emulate the Levitical priesthood garments in a manner uniquely theirs.
What the Word of God says:
12 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: 13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: 14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: 15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: 16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: 17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. 19 For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell; 20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they bethings in earth, or things in heaven, (Colossians 1:12-20, KJV).
(5) · FATHERHOOD: Priests are referenced as “Father”, which Christ plainly states is an affront to Him. He makes it clear that no one in that spiritual context is to be called Father but God Himself.
What the Word of God says:
(6) · DOCTRINES OF DEMONS: Catholic priests, nuns, monks, and the Pope all must take a vow of celibacy whereby they are forbidden to marry. According to scripture this is a doctrine of demons. We are never to forbid anyone to marry, and marriage is honorable in all.
What the Word of God says:
1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; 2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; 3 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth. 4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving: 5 For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer, (1 Timothy 4:1-5, KJV).
Also:
(7) · MARY AS A DIVINE BEING: Their ardent worship and prayers to Mary aligns with their belief that she is a divine being of immaculate conception. This has no scriptural validity whatsoever. Jesus Christ made this clear when He stated in the presence of His mother and siblings that only those who follow and obey Him are His brothers and sisters and mother. Mary was a young virgin girl chosen by God. She was a mortal with mortal relatives, namely Elizabeth who gave birth to John the Baptist. She was a mortal who fulfilled the prophecy of Christ’s birth, spoken of in Isaiah. She gave birth to Christ’s many siblings, was present at His crucifixion, and became a partaker of His eternal salvation as one who believed and followed Him. She was present in the upper room in Acts when the Holy Spirit came on the day of Pentecost.
What the Word of God says:
1 And he went out from thence, and came into his own country; and his disciples follow him. 2 And when the sabbath day was come, he began to teach in the synagogue: and many hearing him were astonished, saying, From whence hath this man these things? and what wisdom is this which is given unto him, that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands? 3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him. 4 But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house. 5 And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them, (Mark 6:1-5, KJV).
Also:
31 There came then his brethren and his mother, and, standing without, sent unto him, calling him. 32 And the multitude sat about him, and they said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren without seek for thee. 33 And he answered them, saying, Who is my mother, or my brethren? 34 And he looked round about on them which sat about him, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren! 35 For whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and mother, (Mark 3:31-35, KJV).
(8) · FORGIVENESS GRANTED BY MAN: They believe that only by confession to the Priest (Father) can anyone be forgiven of their sin. The Priest functions as a mediator between God and Man. Upon confession, the Priest (Father) gives an assignment of what prayers to pray by the rosary, and how many times they are repeated. The rosary is a combination of 2 prayers: Hail Mary and Our Father. This penance determines whether or not the individual is forgiven. According to scripture, no one mediates between God and Man but Jesus Christ.
What the Word of God says:
3 That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. 4 And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full. 5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. 8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us, (1 John 1:3-10, KJV).
1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: 2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world, (1 John 2:1-2, KJV).
Also:
(9) · THE CATEGORIZING OF SIN: They have categorized sins according to their severity. Some bring strict condemnation, while others which are lesser can easily be forgiven. Sin is categorized by Original, Cardinal, Mortal, Grave, and Venial. God makes no such categorizations in scripture. Although earthly punishments vary for different sins according to the Law of Moses, God makes it clear that the wages of all sin is death, both physical and spiritual.
What the Word of God says:
Also:
11 And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. 13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. 14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire, (Revelation 20:11-15, KJV).
(10) · THE PAPACY AS HEAD OF THE CHURCH: The Papacy remains headed in Rome. It rules over all Catholics and determines the order of the international church. The Pope is viewed as “Head of the church”, much like Constantine designed it to operate when it was Head of the State. The Papacy to this day has great influence in regional and national affairs as well. Christ makes it clear that He alone is the head of His Church — that there is one Lord and one baptism and one Body. This is in Christ alone — not any organization of man.
What the Word of God says:
15 Wherefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and love unto all the saints, 16 Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers; 17 That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: 18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, 19 And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, 20 Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, 21 Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: 22 And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, 23 Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all, (Ephesians 1:15-23, KJV).
(11) · THE WORD OF GOD CHAINED: The Catholic church, for centuries, intentionally kept the Bible from its congregants and followers. The order of Mass was recited in Latin, which is now considered a dead language, which further kept people ignorant of what was being spoken. For centuries the people depended upon the Priest to teach, recite, and interpret the scriptures. There was no access to the Word of God for laity until the Protestant Reformation. Had people long known for themselves what the Word of God truly said, the Catholic Church would have failed to subdue them. And that is precisely what happened with the Protestant Reformation under Martin Luther when the Word of God was no longer privileged to the religious elite, but made freely available to the common man.
What the Word of God says:
8 Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel: 9 Wherein I suffer trouble, as an evil doer, even unto bonds; but the word of God is not bound. 10 Therefore I endure all things for the elect’s sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. 11 It is a faithful saying: For if we be dead with him, we shall also live with him: 12 If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us: 13 If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself. 14 Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the Lord that they strive not about words to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers. 15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 16 But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness, (2 Timothy 2:8-16, KJV).
(12) · CONDEMNATION OF OUTSIDERS: The Catholic church, traditionally condemns and disowns those who depart. They suffer grave insult and at times the loss of family, and can even be ostracized from society. For centuries the Catholic Church was intensely feared. The power and wealth they amassed to themselves was egregious, and therefore uncontested. It ordered entire societies and even nations. To leave is to suffer utter condemnation by God.
What the Word of God says:
1 Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you, to me indeed is not grievous, but for you it is safe. 2 Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the concision. 3 For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh. 4 Though I might also have confidence in the flesh. If any other man thinketh that he hath whereof he might trust in the flesh, I more: 5 Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee; 6 Concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless. 7 But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. 8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, 9 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: 10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; 11 If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead, (Philippians 3:1-11, KJV).
(13) · SHEDDING OF INNOCENT BLOOD: The Catholic church has shed an enormous amount of innocent blood throughout the ages. It has a truly horrific amount of Christian blood on its hands alone. Those who challenged it were not only imprisoned, but executed and burned at the stake. Joan of Arc is perhaps the most noteworthy example of such a person. But there were many others like her whom we will never know, whose blood can only be avenged by the Lord Himself.
What the Word of God says:
16 These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: 17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, 18 An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, 19 A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren, (Proverbs 6:16-19, KJV).
Also:
1 These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended. 2 They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service. 3 And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me, (John 16:1-3, KJV).
And finally:
(14) · INDULGENCE OF SINS: The Catholic church allowed for various sins that could later be atoned for with proper penance and prayers — for a price. These were known as “indulgences”. Indulgences could very literally be purchased. Once bought, the price of the indulgence was redemptive: it shortened the amount of time in purgatory for a loved one or for themselves. It could even mean the difference between Heaven or Hell. Because the Catholic church sees itself as having the authority to forgive sin, indulgences were often purchased. As such, money followed many a sin into the treasury of the Catholic church. Such a practice is heretical, being forbidden in scripture, and condemned by God. Never does God permit us to sin, regardless of reason.
What the Word of God says:
7 For if the truth of God hath more abounded through my lie unto his glory; why yet am I also judged as a sinner? 8 And not rather, (as we be slanderously reported, and as some affirm that we say,) Let us do evil, that good may come? whose damnation is just. 9 What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin; 10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: 11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God, (Romans 3:7-11, KJV).
Also:
1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? 2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? 3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? 4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: 6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. 7 For he that is dead is freed from sin. 8 Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: 9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. 10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. 11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. 12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. 13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. 14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. 15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid. 16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? 17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. 18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness. 19 I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness. 20 For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. 21 What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. 22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. 23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord, (Romans 6:1-23, KJV).
And finally:
14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified. 15 Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before, 16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; 17 And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more. 18 Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin. 19 Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, 20 By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh; 21 And having an high priest over the house of God; 22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) 24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: 25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching. 26 For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, 27 But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. 28 He that despised Moses’ law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: 29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. 31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God, (Hebrews 10:14-31, KJV).
(15) · ADDING TO THE WORD OF GOD: The Catholic church has added numerous books to its Bible that were clearly rejected for canonization by the Jewish Orthodoxy. The Apocrypha is included in the Catholic Bible. We must understand, the Holy Canon was established by the Jewish Orthodoxy precisely because the Holy Texts are Jewish in origin. God entrusted His Word solely to the Jews. The entire Bible is Jewish, cover to cover. There are only 66 books in the canon of the Holy Bible. Although cherished, any other works, Apocrypha included, are considered supplemental historical texts. They are not regarded as the inspired Word of God.
The Word of God says:
5 Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him. 6 Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar, (Proverbs 30: 5-6, KJV).
And:
16 For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17 For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. 18 And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount. 19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: 20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. 21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost, (2 Peter 1:16-21, KJV).
(16) · HERETICAL DOCTRINE: The Catholic church employs its own doctrine through its own liturgical work in written format: The Catechism of the Catholic Church. This 900 page book is what governs and guides the entire institution. God has made it clear that His word is sufficient to guide us in all matters. We do not need supplemental texts or books. The Christian belief in Sola Scriptura is that God’s Word, the holy canon, is sufficient in all matters.
What the Word of God says:
12 Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. 13 But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived. 14 But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; 15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works, (2 Timothy 3:12-17, KJV).
(17) · HOARDED WEALTH VS. VOWS OF POVERTY: The Papacy has hoarded wealth for centuries — so much so that it’s glaring. While it forces nuns and monks to take a vow of poverty it gloats with gold. Much of the subsequent power the Catholic church holds is directly tied to its massive wealth. We are not taught to amass wealth here on earth, and for those who are wealthy, we are taught not to trust in riches, but in Christ alone. We are to remember the poor, share with the needy, and give liberally unto Christ and His kingdom. There are many, many scriptures on money and wealth. Many godly people, including the Patriarchs, were wealthy. Jesus does not condemn wealth, but the mishandling of riches. Neither does He condemn the impoverished. He makes it clear that we are to be found good stewards of that which He’s entrusted to us, whether it be little or much.
What the Word of God says:
14 For the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods. 15 And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey, (Matthew 25:14-15, KJV).
And:
(18) · FORBIDDEN MARRIAGE: Forbidden marriage is instituted widely among those who serve in the Catholic church. The Pope, priests, monks, and nuns are all forced to take a vow of celibacy and poverty that is lifelong. Again, scripture says this is a doctrine of demons. God instituted marriage and it is honorable in all.
Also:
(19) · CHRIST’S BODY AND BLOOD: The eucharist and the cup served during communion is believed to become transformed into the literal body and blood of Jesus Christ upon consumption. Once entering the individual, it is then transformed. This is not scripturally accurate. Christ made that clear when He took the cup and broke the bread at the Passover meal with His disciples before His crucifixion. He had not even been crucified when He enacted this and revealed Himself in that prophetic meal.
What the Word of God says:
22 And as they did eat, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and brake it, and gave to them, and said, Take, eat: this is my body. 23 And he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them: and they all drank of it. 24 And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many. 25 Verily I say unto you, I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, until that day that I drink it new in the kingdom of God. 26 And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives. 27 And Jesus saith unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered, (Mark 14: 22-27, KJV).
(20) · FORCED EVANGELISM AND GENOCIDE: The Catholic church committed heinous acts of genocide against Native American people groups in an effort to “evangelize” them. Their manner of proselytizing was barbaric, and the scars exist unto this very day. People were tortured, suffered, and died in the name of Jesus Christ. The Catholic church also collaborated with the Federal governments of Canada and the United States to establish boarding schools for Indian children, where today mass graves have been excavated with thousands of children’s bodies unearthed. In no way is this a fulfillment of Jesus Christ’s Great Commission. Instead, it was an attempt to convert those whom they termed as “savage” into a Catholic, making them “civilized”. And if that attempt was at all thwarted or rebelled against, their subjects were tortured and killed.
What the Word of God says:
18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. 19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen, (Matthew 28: 18-20, KJV).
And:
24 And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, 25 In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; 26 And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will, (2 Timothy 2:24-26, KJV).
(21) · ANTISEMITISM: The Catholic church is one of the most, if not the most, antisemitic denomination the world has ever known. In fact, much of the antisemitism we know and experience today originated with the Catholic church through their doctrine known as Replacement Theology, which teaches that Jews cannot be saved because they killed their Messiah. They believe and teach that their Church now replaces the Jewish people, inheriting the blessing and salvation of God that was originally intended for Israel. Jews are traditionally very hated among Catholics for this reason. Their bible also interprets scripture to this end. Many of the verses, their headings, and their interpretations no longer properly reference Israel but the Church.
What the Word of God says:
And:
9 Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile; 10 But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile: 11 For there is no respect of persons with God, (Romans 2:9-11, KJV).
And finally:
1 Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved. 2 For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge. 3 For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. 4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth, (Romans 10:1-4, KJV).
1 I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. 2 God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew. Wot ye not what the scripture saith of Elias? how he maketh intercession to God against Israel, saying, 3 Lord, they have killed thy prophets, and digged down thine altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my life. 4 But what saith the answer of God unto him? I have reserved to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal. 5 Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace. 6 And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work. 7 What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded 8 (According as it is written, God hath given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear;) unto this day. 9 And David saith, Let their table be made a snare, and a trap, and a stumblingblock, and a recompence unto them: 10 Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see, and bow down their back alway. 11 I say then, Have they stumbled that they should fall? God forbid: but rather through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke them to jealousy. 12 Now if the fall of them be the riches of the world, and the diminishing of them the riches of the Gentiles; how much more their fulness? 13 For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I magnify mine office: 14 If by any means I may provoke to emulation them which are my flesh, and might save some of them. 15 For if the casting away of them be the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead? 16 For if the firstfruit be holy, the lump is also holy: and if the root beholy, so are the branches. 17 And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert graffed in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree; 18 Boast not against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee. 19 Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off, that I might be graffed in. 20 Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear: 21 For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee. 22 Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in hisgoodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off, (Romans 11:1-22, KJV).
(22) · PURGATORY: Purgatory is a place in-between Heaven and Hell where a soul is in limbo. You do not ascend to Heaven. Nor do you descend into Hell. You stay in purgatory until you work your way out, or until others pray you out.
What the Word of God says:
27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: 28 So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation, (Hebrews 9:27, 28, KJV).
(23) · CONFIRMATION AS THE ACT OFFICIATING SALVATION: Catholicism practices what is known as “Confirmation”. This is when a youth is deemed to be the age of accountability, able to make a decision to join the Catholic church, thus becoming a member of the Body of Christ. As such, the child assumes the religious responsibility toward obeying the Catholic doctrines and practices. Until this time a child cannot partake of the body and blood of Jesus Christ, which is served as communion. That ritual is withheld from them. Confirmation is thought to be a means toward salvation, but it is more clearly practiced as becoming a member of the Catholic church. We can receive genuine salvation from Christ at any age. We do not need a church leader for that to happen. Nor do we need to take communion for that to happen. We do not even need to be baptized for salvation to happen. Salvation occurs when we confess with our mouths and believe in our hearts that Jesus Christ is Lord and repent of our sins.
What the Word of God says:
9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. 12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him, (Romans 10:9-12, KJV).
And:
13 Then were there brought unto him little children, that he should put his hands on them, and pray: and the disciples rebuked them. 14 But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven, (Matthew 19:13-14, KJV).
(24) · INFANT BAPTISM: Catholics practice infant baptism as a means of entering the Body of Christ. This is ordered by the Church for anyone to be considered a member of the Catholic church, or to inherit eternal salvation. However, baptism according to scripture is unto repentance. It’s not something practiced at birth or infancy, precisely because it requires the full knowledge, freewill, and consent of those who are baptized. Baptism, according to scripture, is an immersion revealing our repentance of dead works and faith in Christ. It represents our death, burial, and resurrection in the Lord Jesus Christ, which He demonstrated for us. The dedication of an infant to God is honorable, regardless of your denomination. That dedication is done by prayer alone, which is sufficient — not by baptism. Parents have all authority to dedicate their own children to God, whether it be alone in private, or publicly by way of a church leader. They do not require an officiate to perform that right before God. But to baptize an infant for the purpose of eternal salvation is not something scripturally supported. Also, baptism is performed only by submersion, as Christ demonstrated — not with the sprinkling of water.
The Word of God says:
3 And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins; 4 As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. 5 Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth; 6 And all flesh shall see the salvation of God. 7 Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. 9 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 10 And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then? 11 He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise. 12 Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do? 13 And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you. 14 And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages. 15 And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not; 16 John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire: 17 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable, (Luke 3:3-17, KJV).
And:
1 In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, 2 And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. 3 For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. 4 And the same John had his raiment of camel’s hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey. 5 Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan, 6 And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins. 7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance: 9 And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to ourfather: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. 10 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: 12 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire. 13 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. 14 But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? 15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him. 16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: 17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased, (Matthew 3:1-17, KJV).
And finally:
11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord, (Romans 6:1-11, KJV).
Conclusion
As you can see, the Catholic Church does, in fact, by definition alone, meet sufficient criteria to be considered a cult.
So, is Catholicism a cult? By definition, yes. Sadly, it is indeed one of the oldest, largest, and most powerful cults in Christendom.
What is most important is that all come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ our LORD and Savior. God is able to sort out the rest when we yield it to Him. That journey will look different for each of us as we follow Him and take up our cross daily.
I pray this FAQ has been helpful for those who are questioning whether or not Catholicism is a cult. I pray this gives a clear answer. Please be aware, there is grave scriptural consequences for those who would pervert the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I therefore leave you with this passage whereby Paul speaks emphatically to the Galatians, and urge you to heed his warning:
6 I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: 7 Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. 9 As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed, (Galatians 1:6-9, KJV).
