Erin's Library
At the age of seven I began constructing books by hand, filling their pages with stories that my parents have kept to this day. That passion was driven by an ardent love and fascination for books — both reading and writing them. That love has grown and matured throughout my life, making me the author I am today. What most people may not realize is that any great author is also a great reader. My personal love for reading is voracious. However, it’s a luxury that is not often afforded in my busy schedule. As an author, I’m also a huge advocate for the literary arts. If you’ll let me put a book in your hands — I will.
A good book can change your life. That’s what this page is about. Here, I will introduce you to some of my favorite literary works from my personal library, and provide you a listing of my current reads.
Below you will find a collection in varying genres, both Christian and secular, which have valuable messages worthy of your invested time and interest. You’ll find that I favor history, drama, memoirs, biographies, books of antiquity, and romance. As for Christian works, I prefer those with exceptional spiritual depth and uncompromising truth. Explore and enjoy!
The Luxury of Literacy
People have asked me why reading is so important. Those who don’t read often wonder why it’s such a coveted pastime, and why it is sanctioned in the educational system as a priority in any class or curriculum. Truth be told, the literary arts — in every form — are still the primary means for reaching the masses. From children’s books to regal novels, reading has always been of primary importance for a functioning society. Ask anyone who is illiterate, and you’ll soon find why reading is so important.
Yet aside from basic literacy, reading develops us as human beings. And aside from the Bible, reading a good book is one of the best therapies there is, allowing us to experience people, places, and eras of time we would never otherwise encounter. A good author has the ability to transport their readers, affording them a grand escape, where they’re transported into another world meeting new people and experiencing things life could otherwise never afford them. Come and go at your leisure. A good book, unlike a movie, can travel anywhere. Without the help of these authors who offer us such amazing experiences, we can remain very shallow, naive, and ignorant people who do not truly understand the real world beyond us, or the people who live in it, whether past, present, or future. If you want to grow as an individual of maturity, substance, and depth, reading is one of the very best ways to do so — all with the pleasure of being greatly entertained.
Jesus understood the power of a good story. It has the potential to effect change in the hearer. And when the author knows what they’re doing, that is precisely what is maximized in an excellent high quality read.
How long has it been since you’ve read such a book? Or, have you ever read a book like this? Books which fit this profile are not only a wonderful pleasure, but they are truly life changing. If you’ve answered no, you’re not alone. Books such as these are rare. They’re not easy to find, and that is what this page is about.
Finding a truly good author is like finding a best friend. They deliver. Reading is a precious investment of time, so I have some hard fast rules I’d like to share with you. First, I give any work three chapters. If the plot is not developing by then, and I’m not consumed in a storyline that I see beautifully unfolding, or if I’m not intrigued, inspired, or interested in what happens next — it’s over. I’m done. An excellent author will capture their audience through an engagement of both imagination and emotion — and they won’t waste their readers’ time doing it. A good book has the ability to not only entertain, enlighten or educate you, but challenge and change you. Quite simply, you come away better than you were before you read the book.
There is nothing worse than investing faithfully in a written work, only to finish it and feel as if you’ve wasted your time. Whether its a predictable ending, a shallow storyline, undeveloped characters, or a dead plot — those are hours you simply can’t get back. I caution anyone against reading a book just for the sake of finishing it. With all due respect, toss it and keep looking. Authors are equally as diverse in their literary taste as readers.
Therefore, if you’re looking for an excellent book from a Christian perspective, I’d like to help you find one. Personally, I’m a deep person. I’m not into shallow superficial ‘beach reads’ that are often full of recycled fluff. I love deep, stimulating, complex and layered stories that have the potential to consume, challenge, educate, and change me. The more I can experience – the better.
Reading is a pastime of luxury which is far too inopportune for me. As a writer I have what I call ‘required reading’. And then there is my ‘pleasure reading’. With any book, I try to read a chapter a day as a rule of thumb. And not only do I love reading, but a great portion of it as an author is spent doing research for my own work. I usually have about three different genres going at once: one for spiritual growth, one for pleasure, and one for research.
A good book is much like a wave of the sea that rushes in, grabs you, and sweeps you away. For those of you who have never experienced that, may I humbly suggest that you’ve yet to find a book truly worthy of your invested time.
As a Christian author, you may wonder if I read secular works. Absolutely, I do, and frequently. One of the biggest misconceptions among Christians is that secular works are somehow inherently bad, wrong, or perhaps even evil. As a follower of Christ, I would like to debunk that myth. Don’t cheat yourself. There are many, many wonderful secular works that have tremendous value, which actually uphold Christian principles, truths, and which tell stories that can deepen and challenge your faith. If you’re a Christian who has strictly abstained from secular works, I’d like to encourage you to broaden your horizon. Just because a book is secular does not mean the message is inherently ungodly or profane.
I intend to reach the masses. I can’t do that living in a bubble. Christ calls us to be in the world, not of it. Many times that means having a diverse and broad exposure to other cultures, people, and ways of life. I want to understand the world God called me to reach. That understanding is readily available through reading a diversity of works across the spectrum by various authors.
Some of my favorite secular authors are of antiquity such as Jane Austen, Harriet Beecher Stowe, William Shakespeare, Mark Twain, Victor Hugo, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and the like. I also love reading autobiographies and memoirs of individuals from all over the world. These afford invaluable insight and understanding to the world beyond me that I could never otherwise gain.
When choosing a literary work, one must always use discretion, which goes without saying. No one should pollute their mind. With that being said, some of the finest literary classics were never written with an overt intent to reach a Christian audience, yet they had stories that were very much ‘Christian’ in their foundation, affecting the world with an invaluable and timeless message. They were written to reach the masses. And reach the masses, they did. That is always the goal of any invested author.
As an invested reader, I encourage you to expand your library.
How to Know the Difference
Between an Excellent Read & a Nominal Book
An Excellent High Quality Read
I consider an excellent high-quality read to possess the following characteristics, which are rare finds bred by rare authors:
• It is linguistically beautiful, or at the very least grammatically mature and well-developed.
• I am transported and consumed.
• I can’t stop reading.
• When the last page is turned, I want more.
• I continue to ponder it long after it’s over, and I talk about it with others.
• I’ve learned something valuable through the experience afforded to me by the author.
• It changes me for the better and broadens my perspective in life. It stays with me.
• It’s one I want to read again… and then share with others — hence this page.
Such a book is a worthy investment of your time. You were not only entertained, but changed. It never leaves you, or your bookshelf, although you advertise it verbally.
A Nominal or Average Book
In contrast, a nominal or average book is known by the following — and distribution warehouses are glutted with them:
• The vocabulary, grammar, and syntax are common; usually being the 8th – 10th grade level, which can be very boring.
• The emotional engagement is weak. You are not transported or consumed. The storyline is very ordinary or dull. No real escape is afforded.
• Putting the book down comes easily. You are inclined to distraction, or to part for a ‘break’.
• When you turn the last page, your predictions are proven accurate, and you were robbed of the satisfaction or reward so desired.
• It lacked depth and breadth. Very little was learned. The people, places or circumstances you encountered added nothing of value to your life. In short, the story has been told a “million” times with a different title.
• You didn’t think about it much afterward. There was little or no lasting impression.
• You may not have finished it… much less passed it along to another. Perhaps you even regretted reading it.
Ultimately, there was no return upon your investment. These reads are what I call superficial recycled fluff. Sadly, you have wasted your time. Until you read a book that delivers lasting impact upon you and your life, you’ll know no different.

Far From the Madding Crowd
By Thomas Hardy
Hardy’s first classic. After seeing the movie and falling in love with it, reading the book was compulsory. I’m a true sucker for the classics and I can’t wait to sink my teeth into this 1870 romance between Bathsheba Everdene and her shepherd, Gabriel Oak. The novel is filled with “biblical and classical allusions” that make it very appropriate for Christian leisure. I have a feeling this one will end up on my A-List.

Atomic Habits
By James Clear
This is a self-helper. As if I need more habits… well, not really. A Youtuber turned me onto this book. She spoke so well of it that I had to buy it. She, as a successful Influencer, found it “helpful”. I’m only 3 chapters in and I can’t put it down. It reads better than most fiction. James Clear clearly (no pun intended) has something valuable to say. I endeavor to glean from his wisdom. We can all do with a bit more of that, now can’t we. Amen?

A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23
By W. Phillip Keller
What a beautiful, endearing, and illuminating book! This book is precisely what it says; and only twelve chapters, which is perfect for a devotional. This book offers deep and rich insight into how God deals with us as His sheep, and the true yet hidden meanings of many metaphors found in the scriptures. David, the Psalmist, was always a shepherd at heart, and as the chosen king of Israel – that never changed for him. So we see that God is a Shepherd at heart as well, for He chose a man who knew how to lead His people with a heart after His very own. In this beautiful book W. Phillip Keller explores his own experiences in light of this most beloved Psalm, and shares personal stories, biblical insights, and reveals the awe of God’s tender-loving, sacrificial care for each one of us as our Good Shepherd. You will LOVE this book! Just precious.

Beautiful Boy
By David Sheff
The traumatizing and heartfelt account of a father who has lost his son to illegal drugs (methamphetamine). I read this in nursing school of my own free will while researching drug addiction and abuse. In an attempt to find solid answers to many of my questions, I stumbled upon this fabulous work. I found myself completely engrossed in the story, reading it in one day. This one will tear your heart out. It is utterly transparent, and it is so very needed for anyone who longs to understand this demonic pandemic in society.

This book changed my life. It is perhaps the most revelatory book on spiritual warfare available. It’s filled with powerful spiritual revelation, scriptural truth, practical help, and personal testimonies. Christ the Healer
By F. F. Bosworth
Are you, or someone you love, in need of healing? Do you have questions about Christ’s ability or willingness to heal? Do you wonder if the healing ministry of Christ Jesus is still operative in our present day as it was in the time of His earthly ministry? I assure you it is. This book, endorsed by many in the healing ministry, is one of the very first to address this controversial yet relevant topic. Many testify that while reading this book, they received their healing from the LORD. I have witnessed this firsthand myself, as I have given it to several patients as a practicing RN. As a Spirit-filled believer who nearly lost my life to a severe and complicated web of illnesses, I am a living witness to God’s miraculous healing power. I would like to introduce you to the book that has changed millions of lives! This can not be overstated enough. If you are in need of healing, or question the authenticity of Christ’s healing ministry today, this book is for you! There’s none better. Your faith will rise to new levels as the gifts of healing and faith are revealed in the scriptures through an intelligent discussion of theological truths that are presented with an anointing of God’s Holy Spirit. A life-changing phenomenal read! One of those rare books that will never be duplicated. The very breath of God is upon each page. I recommend it as a staple in every Christian home and library.

The Circle Maker
By Mark Batterson
Remarkable book on prayer and intercession. I’ve read it once already, and I’m double-dosing. The anointing upon this work is astounding, and it’s changed my life. I’m also doing the companion forty-day devotional. As much controversy among Christian audiences as this book has received, I must say that this book has been very misjudged and understood. It is not a ‘blab it and grab it’ theology. Mark teaches us the perseverance in prayer with a faith that taps into heaven’s potential, giving numerous testimonies both past and present. It teaches the believer about how to lay hold of God’s promises – not for our will, but for His will to be done on earth as it is in heaven. POWERFUL !

Foxe’s Book of Martyrs
By John Foxe
A glorious yet difficult read. A spiritual heavy-weight, which I personally use as a reference. The accounts rendered within this fabulous and timeless classic are still pertinent for the Church today. Martyrdom is something every believer needs to prepare for, regardless of race, national origin, socioeconomic status, or denomination. As you read you will find the heroic faith of many who died for the sake of the Gospel, including the Apostles. From the beginning of the Church Age to modern day, this is a book that could continue in volumes unceasing, as many presently perish for their faith around the world. I dare you to read it. If you want to be ready for the LORD’s return, this book is mandatory. I urge every believer to obtain a copy for themselves, and read it prayerfully as you discover the faithfulness of the saints and our LORD Jesus Christ.

This is one of the most intriguing and bizarre stories I’ve ever read in my entire life, precisely because it is true. An amazing and transparent testimony of parental insanity that will leave you shaking your head with disbelief. Gut wrenching both in laughter and pain. Find out just how crazy “ordinary” people can be. A troubled and turbulent roller coaster of adventure and enjoyment! Pure in its prose. Unbelievable in its content. One of my favorites!

Heaven is For Real
By Todd Burpo & Lynn Vincent
I read this book on a nursing shift in only 8 hours. Needless to say, it was a slow night. By the time I was done, I was speechless at the candid revelation God had given a four-year old child through such a brief yet traumatic experience. The descriptions of Jesus, the playing with angels, and the meeting of his sister who had been miscarried as well as his grandfather who passed years before his birth, touched my heart beyond words. We are truly eternal beings living a human experience. There is so much I could say, but I don’t want to give it away. This should be read by all who desire a deeper relationship with Christ, or question the Bible. More than anything you will be encouraged to find that Heaven is not just a spiritual concept, but a very real place where we will dwell eternally in the presence of God, our family, friends, and all who have ever gone before us in perfect everlasting joy, peace and love.

In the Kingdom of Ice: The Grand and Terrible Polar Voyage of the USS Jeannette
By Hampton Sides
It’s not often that I run across a book such as this one, which is written with such linguistic beauty, with such haunting prose, and with such passion, terror, and eloquence. I could NOT stop reading, and I found the story to be one that not only gripped me, but ushered me along for a haunting thrill ride that left me both terrified and heartbroken. Hampton Sides writing is absolutely brilliant. His skill and mastery of the English language, and in story-telling, makes this journey to the Arctic all that much more enjoyable and palpable. I was consumed by it. I have not read anything so intense or so thoroughly enjoyable in years. As for the story itself, there isn’t another like it. And I truly believe that there could be no better rendering than what Hampton Sides has given us. He has done these brave men a great gift of due justice, revealing their lives and their work to the world in a heroic retelling of their painful yet miraculous journey. Despite their losses, it was not in vain. Much gratitude and applause to Mr. Sides for such a beautiful and brilliant work.

As a Messianic Jew and Bible teacher she goes into extraordinary depth, desperately teaching the fundamental truths and prophetic significance of Israel both historically and biblically. People Over Profit
By Dale Partidge
I stumbled upon this book through an advertisement which echoed the same values and beliefs I’ve always had, and therefore it resonated within me. I placed an advance order immediately. Dale reveals the secret to a stunning business: relationship. When people are valued, they are motivated, and performance levels peak. Where people are valued, they invest. When people are treated like people – they anchor. Businesses that prioritize people over profit reveal growth that is stunning. God gave us the model. He created us for relationship, and business economics that diminishes relationship will ultimately fail. The greatest investment a business can make is in the individuals who serve it. Are you a business professional? You need this book. Enough said.

By our first meeting we all had the book finished! It is absolutely gripping and life changing. Prepare to be moved. This story is about a prostitute in the 1850’s who is rescued by a Christian farmer, revealing the passionate and unyielding love of Christ for His bride through an allegory of the biblical book, Hosea. The Seduction of Christianity: Overcoming the Lukewarm Spirit of the Church
By Jill Shannon
This amazing book is one I felt compelled by the LORD to read. Its message is critically urgent, and it echoes the same core message God has been speaking to me for years. Jill beautifully translates the LORD’s desperate plea to His Church in these last days, which summons us into a place of deep and abiding intimacy and genuine repentance. This is now on my ‘required reading’ list, and it’s feeding the fire God has been fueling for years, which is a wonderful confirmation and comfort. I recommend it for any Christian who wants to truly walk with the LORD and overcome the lukewarm spirit that will ultimately lead the Church into a place of misery, blindness and captivity — and finally God’s judgment. You can overcome, and Jill will show you how.

Uncle Tom’s Cabin
By Harriet Beecher Stowe
A linguistically gorgeous and enchanting read. Brilliantly written. Marvelously rendered. Thought provoking and powerful. This is the one book credited with having started the Civil War in an abolitionist movement, whose acclaim was received by President Abraham Lincoln himself after the nation was awakened to the horrors of slavery in powerful and thought provoking prose that left people wringing their hands with repentance. Harriet Beecher Stowe offers a candid behind-the-scenes story into the real life of slavery, with rich and heroic characters that will make your heart swell and ache. Simply unforgettable. This book is unlike any other I’ve ever read in my life. I enjoyed every jot and tittle. A literary classic which has no rivals. It stands alone as a masterpiece.

Dony Jay does not disappoint! This book is constant action! There is such grit! There was plenty of mystery and I loved the detail. It gave me such an appreciation for what these people do for our country. And Dony Jay shows how God is intimately and secretly involved in America through those who serve.
