Blog Restructure: Phase One of Our SEO Project Launch
As many of you have probably noticed, scheduled posts have been delayed this June here at The Wordsmith Blog. My sincerest apologies. There have been several things going on in the ministry — many which are good, some which are challenging, and all which are very time-consuming. The plan is to be caught up by July with any delayed posts and have them published on their respective dates retroactively in an effort to preserve the timeline.
With that said, you may be wondering what is going on behind the scenes. One of our largest projects to date is the SEO (Search Engine Optimization) project launched this Spring, which we mentioned in our quarterly report. This project will take place in three phases, with a tentative completion date in the Spring of 2018. With our security project completed on schedule as of May, we officially launched the SEO project without delay this June.
Although this project is necessary, it’s proving to be very intense and complex, requiring diligent keyword research and a careful critique and rewrite of each individual post. However, we are excited about what it will bring and encourage you to wait it out with us. It will be well worth it!
1.) Phase One completes the Blog Restructure (discussed here).
2.) Phase Two will involve website restructure.
3.) Phase Three will require fully indexing and attaching all our media and imaging with proper titles, descriptions, metadata, key words, and author attributions (although they may not be necessary or required).
Phase One — The Blog Restructure
Phase One of our SEO Project is a complete restructure of The Wordsmith Blog.
That means our categories, sub-categories, tags, and taxonomy is going to change drastically — all which affects the indexing of our site by search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and Bing. This involves redirects and deletions of various kinds, and will also require a rewriting of content within every post involving key words, phrases, appropriate headings, and an internal linking structure that supports similar content. There are more than 160 posts at present, each which will require a detailed examination and careful rewrite.
The outcome of this project means our content will be indexed accurately for those who are searching. That translates to reaching our audience with the Truth of God’s Word. It also means a more precise and easy navigation for those who are presently visiting the website.
Without proper SEO excellent content may very well be written, but it cannot be indexed appropriately. And if it can’t be indexed appropriately, the chances of it being found are extraordinarily slim. In fact, it can be near to impossible. We are merely one in a sea of millions of search results. Our goal is to eliminate any possible indexing barrier, and thereby further our global reach with the content God has given us to share.
For the months of July through September the Blog will be quiet, with the exception of The Gospel Diaries. These will be the only posts continued at this time for the sake of our three-year discipleship journey, which was a massive launch at the close of Passover (the beginning of the spiritual new year). All other writings will be suspended until the SEO project is completed. We are allowing three months to complete Phase One, which may require a greater allotment of time. Therefore, there are no hard deadlines.
Once October is here we will be fast approaching the High Holy Days. As many of you know the blog is silent during these annual feast days. Again, the only exception will be The Gospel Diaries. The current plan to continue publishing posts in this category stands firm at this time.
What You Can Expect
When the project is complete you can expect the blog to look much the same in appearance, yet it will function differently in navigation.
• CATEGORIES: Blog categories are equivalent to the ‘table of contents’ in a book. Therefore, you will see a brand new blog menu atop the blog page with new category lists and their corresponding sub-categories.
• TAGGING: Tags are equivalent to the ‘index’ in a book. As such, tags are much more specific; applying to many categories. Tags will be available within each post at the bottom, providing you the added benefit of an even more precise and narrowed search for similar content.
• INTERNAL LINKING: Each post will also include internal links which we have hand-picked, specifically chosen to present you with similar content for further ease of reference. None of these choices will be automated. These will be placed strategically as you read so you can navigate on par.
Individual post rewrites may be necessary. As many of you are aware, many of my posts are quite long, exceeding 3000 words. Some are as many as 5000. And most of them are written at a fairly advanced level. Unbeknownst to me at the time, this is not the norm for blogging, and most people do not visit a blog with the intention of reading a post that long. Some of these posts take an hour to read. With that said, there will be a change in future blog posts and their structure.
Future posts will be between 1000 to 1500 words maximum, and include no more than 3 subtitles or sections. The content will be written in a manner that can be read in 10-15 minutes with a moderate Flesh Reading Score averaging a 10th grade level. Posts that are longer will be warranted as cornerstone content, ranking them as core content on our site. Posts this long will contain their own internal table of contents with jump links for ease of reference within the document.
As for past posts, they will require a careful rewrite as well. Blog posts that were previously this long will either be split into parts (ie. Part I, 2, or 3) or they will be made into entirely separate posts of similar content. If the post is worthy of remaining that length, and cannot be segregated appropriately, they will be converted to cornerstone content — again, indexing them as core reading material.
We have done our utmost in preparation, design, and planning to seek God’s will and His layout for the content He wants presented. There is an extraordinary amount of time invested in writing excellent content for the public on any given topic or category. I endeavor to continue with excellence in that regard. As the sole author, I take my writing very seriously, and the words I put on a page are extraordinarily dear. They are a great spiritual stewardship which the Lord has entrusted to me. Therefore, I would prefer to wait, writing an excellent post which is unfortunately delayed, rather than turn out material that is sub-par and unworthy of publishing. We hope you would agree.
The categories and sub-categories you’ll soon see will be brand new, offering a better representation of our content that is far more accurate. We hope this will help you find precisely what you’re looking for more quickly and with greater ease. No duplicate content should be found, which in times past has been confusing both for readers as well as search engines.
It will be important to note that “Events” will no longer be published via the blog. Instead, Events will be found on our Events page. This will eliminate duplicate content on the website and provide a one-page portal for registrations and information.
In all, Phase One of our SEO project involves a massive yet detailed rewrite of content, which will take a considerable amount of time to complete. We trust that you’ll be pleased with the outcome and we kindly ask for your prayers and patience as it undergoes completion. We endeavor to do all with excellence and accuracy.
Please be mindful that we also anticipate search engines to need approximately 3 months for indexing these changes thoroughly and appropriately, as these changes are both permanent and exhaustive.
Thank you for your patience and support! Please pray for us, and by all means we invite to continue reading! If you haven’t already, you can save yourself time by subscribing today! The more you visit us, the quicker each search engine will index our site!
Cheers & Shalom,
